Celtic Knot #1

I made this last night, when I needed some studio time (it had been a long day of paperwork and computer stuff). I used a drawing from a Dover book on Celtic knotwork, traced it, and then stitched the lines with green thread. Then I used fabric dye to color the knot, and spritzed it with water to make it bleed a bit. After it was dry, I added the dots with a Pigma pen. I would love to design some of these knots myself.

I spent a year of college in Scotland, and was always fascinated with these designs, especially the ornate ones (and spooky skulls and such) on the ancient tombstones in the graveyards there, and in illuminated manuscripts from Scotland, Ireland and England.

Note: The design for this piece comes from Celtic Art: The Methods of Construction (Lavishly illustrated with line drawings & photographs) by George Bain.

  1. Susan, that piece is beautiful, I'm guessing the photo doesn't do it justice. At first glance, I thought the pigma pen marks were beads. Did you brush the dye onto the knot?

I love adding water to something and letting it take the color where it will. It makes for happy accidents sometime!

  2. Thanks, Danielle! I thought about doing beads or hand stitching (a simple "chicken scratch" with Perle Cotton would have been cool, I think), but I'm doing this for a friend (who did something nice for me) and I need to get it in the mail to him, so I didn't have time. Next time! I think I'm going to do more of these. Probably a little bigger in size; this one is only 4x6".

I did brush the dye on, but I used one of those things that is more like the tip of a felt-tip pen, and not a brush. This let me control it more. And then it looked TOO controlled, so I spritzed it.
