Aurifil’s July Designer of the Month, and a give-away

Allow me to introduce you to the Aurifil Designer(s) of the Month for July: Barb Persing and Mary Hoover from the design team Fourth & Sixth Designs. The name of their company comes from the fact that they are sisters, the fourth and sixth children of a close-knit family  from southern New Jersey.

You can read and in-depth interview with the two sisters on the Aurifil news page, and download the free project they designed. Isn’t it lovely?

Remember, if you make any project from the design team, load a photo to our Aurifil Flickr group. This puts you in the running to win an Aurifil thread prize!

Mary and Barb lecture and teach, and are also the authors of StrataVarious Quilts: 9 Fabulous Strip Quilts from Fat Quarters (C&T Publishing, May 2008):

WE HAVE A WINNER! Geni in The Netherlands has won the Aurifil thread for July.
Each month this year, I’m going to be giving away a pack of Aurifil minispools (like the one shown above) when the new project is announced. Just leave a comment after this post telling me how old you were when you started quilting, I'll pull a name at random on Monday, August 1 at noon EST. The sampler pack includes great colors in different weights.

  2. I was 16 when I started quilting. My first project, which is still a work in progress, was to quilt a top my grandmother had made when she was 16. I am now 42. It is about time I finished it.

  4. Susan, Good Morning. It looks like we are both early risers this morning. I learned to sew in Jr. High and learned to quilt in High School. My mom was learning at the time and when the piecing was done the hand quilting frame went up and we hand quilted it. Thank you for this chance to win some great thread. Take care and God bless, Cory

  5. I was 21 in 1976 when I started quilting. I had no mentor and learned on my own, so sometimes I do things 'my way'. *smile*

  6. Susan,
I think my first quilted project was a small quilt for a doll bed when I was 11 or 12. Didn't really start making quilts until I was about 25. By 40 I had moved to non-traditional quilts and that is what I am making today.

  9. OK--I started sewing way back in the Dark Ages with the help of my mother and grandmother. The big change came when I transitioned from sewing clothing to quilting (two very different things!) That change came in 1996 with the help of Carol Herbst who had innocently invited me to join her quilting group.

  18. I've sewn since I was a child, but took my first quilting class in my late 20's (prior to rotary cutters). I hated it and didn't continue. Then I took another class in 1999 and have been hooked ever since!!!

  19. I started quilting after my son was born, so that was in 1982. Then I did a variety of crafting and painting, then rug hooking, now I am back to quilting again. How old I was is a good question, I keep forgetting how old I am now, lol.

I was about 18 when I first made a patchwork quilt. Not exactly quilting, but it was a good start. I think it was later in my 30s when I made a denim and calico quilt, or started one for a boyfriend then. Found out he was cheating on me so I kept the quilt and still have it to this day to remind me.

  30. My mother tells me that she let me sew in the corner of one of her quilts when I was a little girl - about 5 years old. I began quilting in earnest on my own at about 55, though did a few things from age 29 forward. In other words, I don't know what age to claim!

  33. My Grandma Wink taught me to "quilt" with a double layer of paper napkins and some embroidery thread when I was about 9. She never taught me the finer points of quilting, though. My first hand quilted quilt had knots on the back!

  34. Been making quilts for 20 yrs. Made my own clothing since I was 12 yrs old. My mother convinced me that it was not a good thing to cut up perfectly good material and make it into a "blanket" I finally matured at 48yrs of age and made my first quilt..Guess I'm now a family REBEL but am enjoying the journey tremendously
