Swimming along…

The start of “We All Swim Together”
I had meant to trace some more fish onto my fabric before I started painting, but I just couldn’t stand it, and this afternoon, I gave in and started painting. I love to paint. It is so relaxing, and I just forget all my troubles and get lost in it. I’m using my favorite textile paint, ProFab Transparent and ProBrite Pearlescent paints by ProChemical & Dye

This is the Blackbelly Rosefish:

Yes, it really is this brightly colored! You can see photographs of it on Google Images. He is about 15" long on my piece.

Blackbelly Rosefish
Latin Name: Helicolenus dactylopterus
Habitat: Eastern Atlantic Ocean from Norway to South Africa, and the Mediterranean Sea; and Western Atlantic Ocean from Nova Scotia to Venezuela.
Depth: 330 to 1600 feet
16-18" and 2-3 pounds
Notes: This is a type of scorpionfish. Color is variable. Spines contain toxic venom.

I am just getting started on the Painted Comber:

  2. Love the fish - how do you keep the paint from bleeding from one area to another?

    1. These paints don't bleed as long as you don't add water, Jennifer. They are acrylic paints designed for textiles. ProChem makes an excellent "base extender" that helps keep the paint fluid if it starts to dry out in my palette after I've mixed the colors. It also helps me create tints or glazes of color. They have one base extender for their transparent paints and one for the pearlescent ones.

    1. I don't think they are available in Europe, Hannele. You might be able to get Stewart-Gill paints, and they are wonderful. When you look for paints, look for soft-bodied paints (not the thick ones that come in tubes, but the ones in bottles). I think the transparent or semi-transparent paints work best for realistic subjects. They have more depth to them, and don't look as flat. Hope this information helps!

  6. Wow, just found your blog and it´s awesome what you do and create. I have never tried this painting method, I try it only with fabrics (as seen at "Augen-Blick" or "Krippe"). Lovely works, I enjoy each post I have just seen.

  7. I just bought some fabric paints and was thinking about trying a whole cloth quilt. I'm not sure what my subject will be but can't wait to watch your's develop!
I also got excited about your post on the machine quilting mag. I have to order it!

  8. The fish are really pretty! I haven't tried those paints before, but now I'm inspired to try them out! I also just got your book, Point, Click, Quilt! I'm looking forward to turning my photos into quilts since I've been building up a collection of photos as inspiration for quite a while. It seems like a great book from what I've read so far. Thanks! :)

  9. Thanks for letting me know what you think about my book; I hope you'll be inspired to try working with your photos... The book contains projects so people can try one to learn the process and my techniques, and then go on to make completely original work.

And I highly recommend the ProChem paints. Great quality, great price, great service!

    1. I've already got a project started :) I was actually trying to figure it out on my own before I got the book, but figured I could use a little guidance on construction techniques. It's definitely helpful!
