Gingher scissors factory sale… and a giveaway!

Some of my friends and I took a road trip to Greensboro, NC, today to attend the Gingher scissors factory sale. The photo above shows just some of the loot I brought home. I’m not going to tell you how many pairs I got… that would be too embarrassing!

Here are my friends with all of our stuff stowed in the back of Alisan’s van.
There were cutting mats, all kinds of scissors, rotary cutters (left handed only, boo!), acrylic rulers, and paper cutters. Nothing was more than $10. There were lots of small Gingher utility scissors like these for 50 cents:

The nice heavy dress shears were only about $4 a pair, and lots of the embroidery scissors were only $2 a pair. I also got some wonderful serrated kitchen scissors. These are all overstocks or discontinued merchandise.

We all bought an 18" paper cutter or two. At $10 each, how could we pass this up?

If you live in the area, there’s still time to get some of the goods! The sale is today and tomorrow (Sept. 19) and next weekend, Saturday and Sunday Sept. 25-26. Saturday hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday hours are noon to 5 p.m. The address is 322-D Edwardia Drive, Greensboro NC 27409.

And now for the fun part!

I bought an extra pair to share with you! One lucky reader will win these darling 4" embroidery scissors, with a retail price of more than $35. Just leave me a comment before noon on Saturday, Sept. 25, and tell me about your favorite road trip (where you went, why, and with whom) and you’ll be entered in the drawing. I’ll pull a name at random. Please enter only once. Check back on Saturday afternoon to see if you’ve won.

The give-away is over... Congratulations, Robbie (from Michigan)... You won!

  1. fun haul! we had a fun road trip 8800 feet above sea level at Yellowstone National Park this summer -- great scenery and amazing geography. and my travelling buddies are great too - my two teenage sons and hubby who loves driving our VW camper van.

  2. My favorite road trip was a few years ago. A girlfriend and I did the Western Washington Shop Hop. We took two days to visit 16 shops (there were about 50 on the shop hop). We kept getting lost because the map was awful. It stated "Map not to Scale" and we kept laughing every time we had to turn around. We had so much fun! It was fun to have just girl time!

  3. looks like a fun day...wish i lived closer!

my favorite road trip was with my fiance and we went to St. simon island. it was the first time my pup had seen the ocean and he kept running up the beach to stay away from the waves, then he'd chase it back to the ocean...it was a fun weekend.

  4. The most rememberable road trip i've had was the first time I drove up to Ft Bragg, California. It was a gorgeous scenic drive, and we ended up camping out along the coast for close to a week!! I hope that I'll be able to again with my son once he's big enough =)

  5. Oh, how I would love to go to a factory sale there because I am a lefty! My favorite road trip was with my mom and son (when he was 16 months old) to go to Oregon for the Sisters show. We had a blast from start to finish and brought about as much as you had in the back of that van (but on an airplane!).

  6. My favorite road trip would have to be from washington to North Carolina. We lived in Idaho and drove to washington to spend three months with my daughter and grandkids as we were moving to Goldsboro area of n.c. We didn't have a lot of time as my son in law and grandson had flown up to help us and they had to be back to work. The views from one state to another were fantastic. And I actually got to see fire flyssss yes! Linda

  7. My very favorite road trip was in July 1991 - my husband, oldest son Gabriel (then 12), daughter Kirstie (then 2-1/2) and me. We drove from New Orleans to Baltimore to visit my family. Trisha Yearwood's first song, "She's in Love with the Boy" came out that week, and we heard it so many times on that ride, and each time, Kirstie sang along - she loved that song so much! She sang it so many times it drove Gabriel nuts! (He ended up staying an extra week and flying home by himself because he didn't want to drive back with his sister!) Needless to say, every time hubby, Kirstie and I hear that song now, it brings us back to that trip!

  8. Well, I am tempted to get on a plane and try and catch some of that sale action, but I guess instead I will just try for your giveaway. Favorite road trip was years ago when I was selling fabric for Clothworks. Took my friend Jeanene along and we hit all the out of the way, off the map fabric shops in the wilds of E. Oregon, including the one housed in a trailer in a wrecking yard. Took us about 4 days. We stayed in local motels and managed to have a lot of fun, but I didn't sell enough fabric to pay for gas, much less meals and lodging!

  9. My favorite road trip (actually several)to Paducah for the AQS show each year for the last several years. It is special since I get to go with my two sisters, a niece, and a college friend plus we stay with our friend's sweet mother in law's house right in Paducah. Met you and your mother last year while we all waited to get a table for lunch in this lovely, quaint restaurant. I love Gingers and wish I lived closer to take advantage of the sale.

  13. This past June, I took a road trip all by myself (well, with my GPS) from Corpus Christi, Texas to Virginia, Pennyslvania, and points in between. 13 states in all. Could drive as long as I wanted, stop at fabric and knitting shops and see whatever sights I wanted along the way. Did have a travel partner for a couple of weeks in Virginia and PA, who lives near D.C. and knew where to go. Wish I had happened upon this scissors sale when I went through N.C.!!!!!! Lucky you.

  21. My scissors got ruined by my daughter, so wish I was in that area, I could use some new ones.

My favorite road trips are with my husband. He lets me pick the routes and the stops. The best was when we went to Acadia in Maine, we hit all the quilt, rug and antique stores on route 1. Defintely bought home a lot of goodies on that trip.

  22. Wow, "Holy scissors, Batman!" My memories of the cross country trips I made as a kid with my family are wonderful. But my favorite road trip has to be on my honeymoon. My husband and I drove down from San Francisco to Monterey and then on down to Santa Barbara. The California coastline is just spectacular!

  23. I took my favourite road trip with my grandparents in 1968 from Sudbury, ONtario Canada (where my family had moved in 1967) back home to Windsor, Ontario Canada where all my relatives still lived. I was 14 years old and was going to be away for the whole summer, 500 miles away from my parents and siblings and have a blast with all my cousins. It turned out to be a summer to remember!

  24. Oh how cute those scissors are..so jealous of your great finds:)
My favorite road trip was many years ago when I rode in an old 'woodie' station wagon pulling a vintage camper from Phoenix to the Grand Canyon. The scenery was breath-taking and I was with my great grandmother. Fun times!

  25. Boy I love sales like that. Wish it weren't so far away! My favorite road trip so far is one I take whenever possible with my girlfriends, to McMinnville, TN in either spring or fall to buy plants. McMinnville is a gardeners paradise with plant nurseries everywhere and low, low prices!

    Thanks for having the giveaway.

  29. Funny you should ask because I am on my favorite road trip right now! We live in Texas and are driving to Maryland for a class my hubby needs to take for work. I requested that we leave early and drive the Blue Ridge Parkway, and I am beyond elated that we did. We have meandered the majestic Parkway for two days now, and it has left me speechless! Actually, I am never speechless! It has kept me in awe and I haven't shut up because I cannot contain the excitement this beautiful place inspires within me! I am so in love with it and will be back! 33. My favourite road trip is to Houston although we fly so it's technically not a road trip. My mini group of 6 great friends and a few other quilters try to go every couple of years. This year is it. I think I'll move to your part of the country and get a chance to buy scissors on sale. Wow, that's amazing. Maybe I'll win.

  35. When I was 13 my mother and I went on a 6 week road trip from L.A., across the Northern states & Canada, to Conway N.C. (where she was born) and back along the Southern states. I learned how to navigate on that trip and we saw some great things along the way. It was her last trip 'back East' before she died from cancer 3 years later and I'm glad we had that time together and that I got to see where she spent the first part of her life as a girl and young woman.

  36. Favorite road trip this year was to Canada to visit my daughter. On the way home my hubby and I drove across NY to the Catskills to a little town called Neversink. They have 75 or 78 "barn quilts". We got to see 45 of them. Really neat.

Thank you for the chance at the giveaway.

  38. My favorite road trip was just last month. A group of women got together in CO to dye fabric for a week, a friend flew from WI to Kansas CIty and we drove across Kansas together. Talked all the way, we had never met in person before. Had a wonderful week of dyeing and then drove back cross Kansas shop hopping. Did you know there was a quilt shop every 2 hours through Kansas. Didn't hit them all since they closed before we got to all of them what a wonderful trip.

Thanks for the great giveaway please add me to it.

  39. My late sil and I would travel to a quilt shop in a woman's basement when we first began quilting. It was an all day trip and we totally rearranged the shelves of fabric which were small by today's standards. The owner became a good friend and we had loads of fun!

  40. My favorite road trip has to be a trip I took years ago with 2 friends. We headed for the quilt show in Paducah on a whim (we are from WI). Since the drive was long (7 hours), we scoured my girlfriend's husband's truck for some cd's or tapes. We found three; Conway Twitty, Ricky Nelson and Willie Nelson. Not exactly our kind of music, but what the heck. We started singing along with the tapes and when we didn't know the words, we made up new ones! I have such fond memories of that trip.

    Favorite road trip;
Our son's Make-A-Wish trip was to a 'dude' ranch in Northern CA. He wanted to see the Giant Redwoods so we took a road trip from there to the coast and visited the Red-woods and a fern 'grotto' One of the prettiest places on earth. This was the last trip all my children were with me for so it has a special place in my heart. (Our son died 6 months later.)

My favorite road trip was to Sisters, Oregon for the quilt show. I went with two of my bestest quilting buddies and drove from Sacramento CA to Sisters. We had a blast and were inspired by all the beautiful quilts hanging all over the town. It's a must see for all quilters.

  47. My favorite road trip was always NY to Nashville. We lived in Nashville and would go to NY and the Cape for summer. We were always excited once we hit Knoxville, because we knew only 3 hours until home. The plateau between Knoxville and Nashville was especially interesting because weather always seemed to be exaggerated, and we always seemed to have a thunderstorm.

The next big road trip will be in January with my middle daughter as she heads to a semester in California from Charleston, SC.

I used to live in NY and my sister in law and I took a road trip up to Cape Cod one year. just us girls. we stayed in a B&B and did nothing but shop, shop and more shop. we had to see this particular shop one day and it was at the other end of the cape. we got there 2 minutes before closing time. I ran in, and said "We're in, we made it." at the time it was hilarious. we bought of course. going home, not only was our trunk filled with goodies but the entire back seat and I had to sit with a lamp in between my legs. we saw a deacon's bench and I just had to have it. LOL

The last great "spending" road trip I had like that was an impromptu shop hop with friends that took us to several out of state shops and cleaned out my bank account! You got a great deal.
