Rivers of Red

Rivers of Red (2010)
39" x 50-1/2"
This is Rivers of Red, my latest piece. It is a wholecloth painted quilt that started out as a piece of white Pimatex cotton fabric. I painted the design using acrylic textile paint, then quilted it. It is based on a photo I took of a coleus leaf. I’ve done several other pieces based on these macro photos of coleus; I’m fascinated with the patterns and color variations in these plants. Here are detail shots:

  3. Your work is always gorgeous! Are the pieces raw edge fused or did you use a blanket stitch? Hard to tell--you match the colors and threads so well! When did you say your second DVD will be available? TIA, Sally

  4. I, too, have always been fascinated with the coleus leaf but never would have thought to transfer that to a quilt. What a beautiful job you did of it! Truly inspiring!

  5. Sally, this is a wholecloth painted piece (I just added that information to the post, since I realized that it might be of interest to others.) I start with a piece of Pimatex (100% cotton fabric with a very tight weave by Robert Kaufman fabrics) and paint the design, then layer it with batting and backing fabric and quilt it on my home sewing machine (I don't own a longarm or midarm). My second DVD should be available by Quilt Market (at the end of October) and I will have copies soon after that! Thanks so much.

  6. Wow! It's the color on this piece that just makes it so outstanding and the quilting "ain't" bad either! Beautiful.

  7. Love it!!

"Red Coleus" arrived, and it is WONDERFUL. I am so pleased! My friends are envious.

As I said before, I'm going to be on the lookout for your workshop. I've given your name to our VP. Although scheduling is off in the future, I'll hold my breath until it happens.

    At least I'll try. ;)

    Thank you again!
