2010 Fall Quilt Market, Part 4

Okay, this is probably my most fun experience at this year’s Fall Quilt Market: I walked into Julie Creus’ booth for her company, La Todera. We chatted for a bit, and then she got a phone call. I was looking around at all her cool stuff, and when she got off, she said, “Oh my gosh, I just found out that Kaffe Fassett and Liza Prior Lucy are coming to my booth right now!” She asked if I’d take photos, and I agreed. Sure enough, a few minutes later, here come Kaffe and Lucy. (If you don’t know them, Kaffe is a very famous artist, well known in the quilting world for his luscious floral fabrics. Liza often partners with him, and designs many beautiful quilts with his fabrics.) I clicked away, both on my camera and on Julie’s, and got a bunch of photos of them admiring her work, including the one above.

Julie makes many of her flower pins with Kaffe’s fabrics, and gave him one to take home. She said, “I hope you don’t mind, but I named my pattern Kafflowers after you, because they look great in your fabrics!” He didn’t mind at all. Julie is holding two cute little mushrooms made from her “Plushroom Pincushion Kit” (it retails for $12, and comes with all the fabrics you need to make the big and little ’shrooms).

This was Julie’s very first Quilt Market. I enjoyed talking with her about her experience, because I’m considering the possibility of trying it next year myself. Her booth showed off her products in a very fresh, whimsical way, without a big expense. Isn’t her use of the parasols hanging overhead wonderful?

You can purchase one of Julie’s flower brooches on her Etsy shop.

This is Julie’s friend, Margaret Travis of Eazy Peazy Quilts. She designs fun handbags and purse accessories, and her latest line is designed for use with wheelchairs and walkers. Check out the stylish rhinestone-embellished walker in her display!

Julie and Margaret came together to Quilt Market, and arranged to have their booths side by side so that they could help each other out. Isn’t that smart?

Joanne Figueroa of Fig Tree & Co. designs fabric for Moda, nearly all with her signature buttercream color as a base. Her booth is always just lovely. You can see more photos of it on her blog and see her kits, books and patterns here.

Pat Sloan gives an autographed copy of her book to a lucky recipient.
From time to time while I was strolling the aisles, I came upon sights like this one (above) where an author was signing copies of her (or his) book. If you get there early enough, and get in line, you can get a book, while supplies last. Sometimes the sponsoring company (usually the publisher or a big distributor like Brewer or Checkers) gives you a ticket when you get in line, and that means you are going to get a copy. They hand out as many tickets as they have books stacked up next to the author.

Pat Sloan was signing copies of Appliqué a Garden, which includes seven projects.

She gave me a sneak peek at her new book, Redwork With a Twist, which will be out in December!

This is Moneca Shelhoup of Dora’s Daughter’s Designs. Her tagline is “All that I am and ever dreamed of being, my mother encouraged me to be.” Doesn’t that make you want to cry, it’s so sweet? I loved their crazy cute patterns for crowns (like the one she’s wearing), hats, an owl purse, and contemporary needlepunch embroidery. (Some of these patterns are so new that they are not on the website yet.)

Fabric companies have the biggest spaces at market, sometimes taking up nearly half an aisle! They are often very elaborately decorated in a theme. Some have entire bolts of the new fabrics available for shop owners to examine. Here’s part of Alexander Henry’s display.

And now I think it’s time for another giveaway! How about a copy of the brand new book by elinor peace bailey (yes, she prefers lower case), Patti Medaris Culea and Barbara Willis? It’s autographed by elinor!

Elinor describes herself as an “entertainer, educator and entrepreneur.” She is perhaps best known for her exquisite dolls, and for her wonderfully wild appearance. When I landed at the Houston airport last week, I spotted her in a shop wearing her signature art clothing and bright pink hair, and told her, “I know I’m in Houston now!”

Cloth Doll Workshop is a collaboration by all three authors, and features several doll designs from each of them. It includes very detailed instructions, plus a look at their studios. But I think the best part is the marvelous gallery section in the back, with their work and the work of many other talented doll makers and students.

GIVEAWAY! Win a copy of Cloth Doll Workshop by leaving a comment on this post before noon EST on Wednesday, November 10. Tell me if you’ve ever considered dyeing your hair an unusual color, and if so, why and which color.

I’m going to keep giving away Quilt Market loot in my next few posts, so please come back for a chance to win!

WE HAVE A WINNER! Karen in Tucson won Cloth Doll Workshop.

  1. I've seriously thought about dyeing my hair (or at least part of it) a bright purple for one of belly dance performances. Haven't gotten up the nerve yet....

  2. After my hair started growing back in when losing it to chemotherapy, I dyed mine red/pink . It was more fun than simply looking as though I had a crew cut....it returned the color to my cheeks and made my friends smile. I felt a lot better after this nod to happiness....and after all, I had hair again....albeit short and pink.
I wish I had her artistic flair for fantastic dressing. Geraldine Dix

  3. I wanted to dye it lime green last May for Lyme awareness month...we decided a little clip of fake green hair would do the trick instead! =)

  4. It's hard for those of us with dark hair to dye a bright color without bleaching first! I'm waiting for mine to go whiter before I color it. Won't be long at this rate. :-)

  5. Never thought about it, lol.
I was blonde most of my life and now I am trying to figure out what color it is, a bit of this and that;)

  6. I've never considered dyeing my hair, although I have thought about shaving my head so I didn't have to deal with unruly hair :-)

  7. I have white grey steak (one of those overnight surprise badnews/trama things), and for sons wedding .... considered dyeing it a bright bold pink. But, then I reconsidered (after hearing about how difficult it is to get grey to accept a color... and the expense... And well... time and $$ better spent on other things... like mail order fabric.

  8. I do dye my hair, but in a regular color. Guess I am too much of a coward to use something else :-)

  9. Thanks for sharing all these great pics. I've been to Spring market and can't imagine how much more of a wonderful an experience you had.
Loved seeing eleanor again and would so enjoy her new book--pick me. And yes, I've always wanted purple almost black hair. Thanks.

  10. Thanks for all those photos! So lovely to see that many, almost as good as being there. I have had red streaks at some time but it is as you say, with dark hair you are very colour restricted. My son goes from blue to red to purple streaks though. Quite adventurous!

  11. I have always been afraid of real dye, but I have added tint to my hair before. In highschool, I once did a blue/black tint and a reddish brown one as well.

  12. I dyed my hair pink when I participated in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer in Charlotte, NC. My daughter & I walked the 39.3 miles and raised over $6,000 for the foundation. It was an incredible experience and I would do it all over again !

  13. I've never considered dying my hair a funky color. I'm too much of a closet mouse to attract so much attention to myself! Thanks for the chance to win!!

  14. Okay, I guess I am the black sheep in the bunch. I have never considered dying my hair. It is blond and I always thought it was my best feature. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Am I now disqualified?

  15. No crazy hair thoughts - yet! I did get to take a class with Kaffe and Brandon last year and it was so much fun. I'm loving the show updates and so hope to go one year.

  16. I have eleanor's first book I bought year's ago and was lucky to meet her this year at an Asheville Quilt Guild meeting where she autographed that earlier book. She has inspired me for years and I would truly love a copy of this new book.
Again thank you for such wonderful pictures and comments---wish I could be there as well.

  17. Thanks for sharing Quilt Market with us- I LOVE seeing all the goings-on!
I have very dark brown hair too, so actually dyeing my hair a fun colour wouldn't be easy- but if it were, I would choose bright red because red is my favourite colour and always makes me happy!

  18. How serendipitous, I've just recently become intrigued by doll-making...I've never considered dyeing my brown hair, but if I WERE to do it, it would be to get the red hair that runs in my family that my brother got, but I didn't.

  19. LoVe2cre8, you are absolutely NOT disqualified! :-)

  20. My white hair takes on various colourings too well. Too much iron in the water and it yellows. Too much purple shampoo and I'm glowing lavender! lol

  21. Thanks for the great images from Fall Quilt Market. I would love to win the book.

  22. about 3 years ago I shaved my head and donated my long hair to Wigs for Kids as well as raising money for St Baldricks -- when it was growing out I used all kinds of spray on wild colors and glitter in it -- it was fun (and if I shave again, I'll do it again!)

it would be a thrill for me to win this book -- back about 15 years ago I lived in San Jose and was in a doll club with Barbara Willis -- what fun

thanks so much for the great stories and pictures of Quilt Market

  23. I had to give up putting dye in my hair to cover the bits of gray as the scent from it triggers my husband's asthma. All scented products do that! My daughter did put hot pink streaks in her hair for her wedding. It looked great.
Thanks for all the photos and comments from Houston show.

  24. NEVER - EVER - thought of dyeing my hair. I am conservative - I like my 1/4" seams, straight lines, traditional quilts, matchy fabric - comfy in my box - LOL. You'd never know it if you met me. You'd like I was WILD - weeeeeee! It's my secret - til now.

I've always LOVED creating things. I'd love to take a class from elinor. I LOVE her whimsy. Sometimes I jump outside my box - sometimes.

    Thanks for the opportunity.

  25. Fun giveaway! Yes, I have thought about coloring - more like just adding a few streaks - they have little extensions now you can get for $8 so ya can try it out before going whole hog! Thanks for the giveaway!

  26. Susan - Thank you so much for sharing Quilt Market. I have had so much fun reading your posts and will continue to check back. I'd also like to put a link on my blog because I know my readers will also love it.

  27. No, but I've considered getting my roots done in the near future...how fun to run into quilting royalty during your visit to Houston. I ran into Kaffe in Greensboro, NC of all places, as he was getting ready to do a book signing at a quilt show.

Love seeing your photos of Market!

  28. I have been dyeing my hair since I was in my mid-twenties as my dark brunette hair was turning gray. Would love to put some purple or bright red streaks (thin ones) in and was just thinking about asking hair dresser about that on Thursday - timing is everything. I have taken classes eleanor and would love to have newest book.

  29. Thanks so much for posting all these fabulous pictures! I have been WAITING for this book to come out! Patti Culea helped me decide which Bernina to buy last year (Aurora 440 QE). She is so talented and generous and I love her doll patterns. EPB's wonderful book "Mother Plays With Dolls" has helped deepen my understanding of my own creative process so much. She is just a force of nature! I would dye my hair purple and green and go to Mardi Gras, spreading cheer and healing with my beautimous hair all over NOLA.

  30. Thank you for letting me travel through your blog! Love the pictures. I "thought" I would have my hair "streaked" very lightly in a sandy blonde. I know that isn't "unsual" per ce, but for me with short dark brown hair and doing that ... why I haven't been able to even give it a try - it scares the livin' daylights out off me LOL

  31. I am happy to watch my hair turn white on it's own. I did get burgundy low-lights when I was in college and loved it.
My great aunt used to rinse her hair and did purple or blue or pink depending upon her mood. As a child (in the 60's)I thought this was amazing AND she suited it :)

  32. I hadn't thought of dying my hair an unusual color until now. I do use hair color (auburn) to match my hair and cover the grays. I love to be able to just have pretty gray hair - then, I wouldn't bother coloring it... but now, that I think about it, epb is always so jubilant that I just might consider it!

  33. As I keep getting more and more white and silver hairs among my dark brown, my buddies of the frosted hair group keep asking when I'm going to dye mine gray. I reply, " as soon as I acquire enough shades of purple dye." That usually shuts them up!!

  34. I do dye my hair, but not anything unusual. I can't imagine what my husband would do... maybe if he ever makes me mad enough... This book looks great. My granddaughter wants us to make a doll from a picture we saw in a magazine and I don't have any idea how to start. She loves Fancy Nancy and wants her to look like Fancy Nancy.

  35. I have dyes my hair blonde before because I wanted to see if they really have more fun. Is been blue and red before too!

  36. Yes! I was 8 months pregnant (hubby was a hairdresser) and he dyed my hair RED! Don't ask me why but I was adamant that I wanted red hair (who's to argue with a hormonal, 8 month pregnant woman! - not my hubby!). Well, one day later I was back at the salon and having my hair bleached back to blonde! one day later!! Good think I liked short hair!

  37. My hair is natural gray and has been for many years. Too much trouble and too much money to bother. However, I have inquired about the possibilities a few times. The reply I get from hair stylists is, "people pay a lot money to get hair looking like yours." So, I'll stay with what I have.

  38. I once spray dyed my hair bright pink and green for a charity fund raiser.Elinor's book looks amazing, and I am really enjoying your Market photos, thanks so much.

  39. I have had green hair for St Patrick's Day that was suppose to wash out, needless to say it was still GROWING out in June. I used a color tint to tone it down...but it remained with me for awhile. Lesson learned...colorful wigs when a colorful hair is desired. :)

  40. Thank you for your tour of the Houston Quilt market. I've never been, but was planning on going this year until my plans fell through. I haven't ever really thought about dyeing my hair until I saw this book and read this post! And now I want to dye it any outrageous color that will make a good story. The truth is I have dark hair with quite a bit of silver, which I wear proudly! My son gave me everyone of them!

  41. I have made a couple of Elinor's patterns. What fun! and she has has such a jovial view of life. I know that I would enjoy this new book.

  43. years ago I was experimenting with henna as I disliked my mousy brown hair and I tried the reddish brown that brought out my Irish side that I liked for a while. Then I did one that turned out a burgandy/purpley color... I didn't keep it too long and eventually found a medium brown that suits me... and now covers my gray!

  46. My hair started turning grey when I was in my twenties(a grey streak right in the front part of my head!)- I dyed it for a few years, but it wasn't worth the effort. Now alot of people say they love my hair(almost all grey) so I let it be.
Now I have to go and check on all the links you put in your Festival/Market posts!
