My friend, artist Deborah Bochert has a great new book out called Art Quilt Collage: A Creative Journey in Fabric, Paint and Stitch, and to celebrate, she’s hosting a book release blog hop with video chats! There’s a chance to win the book at each blog hop stop.
Deborah’s book focuses on her interesting collage technique, combining fabric elements with surface design and stitch (both hand work and machine stitching). If you are looking for good basic information about art quilt design, this book has it. It has tons of photos with specific examples, practical advice, and exercises to help you get started or take your work in another direction. It’s a fun read and a valuable resource. I especially enjoyed the section on finding and working with your personal symbols. (One of Deborah’s is the ladder.)

ReplyDeleteI have a rubber stamp that I use on my labels that features A words (a for Ali!!!) and my personal symbols are two small stained glass pieces of church and a bird...for Church Bird (I made up the name when I got married!!). This book looks like an incredible resource for going outside the box!!! Thanks for reviewing it!

ReplyDeleteArt quilts is something I want to explore and this book sounds like the perfect place to start! My personal symbol is a flat spiral. I have earrings with this shape that were hand-made in Sante Fe. I think it means "eternal". Sometimes I think it means crazy and life just keeps me spinning! :)

I seem to have a few symbols-- dragonflies, leaves, trees, nests, and recently dying fall flowers.
ReplyDeleteCan't say I have a steady symbol, but I suppose it has to do with constant change... I'm thinking if I had to have one .... maybe the dotted line in the center of the road... going in any direction, but keeping things moving along on the right side.

As to a symbol...Hmmm...For now, let's go with a butterfly. I'm inspired by nature and my work is always morphing and changing.
ReplyDeleteNo personal symbol - wait! That's not true . . . I've just realized that the 70's happy face is my symbol. I've been using it to sign notes for decades - started well before the "emoticon" was ever invented. Ha! Funny, now that I think about it! :-)

ReplyDeleteMy personal symbol is a circle that is crossed top to bottom and side to side (equidistant cross inside the circle) The other is a bare tree. I have carved rubber stamps for both of them.

ReplyDeleteI often use leaves ever since I made a quilt of leaves by tracing leaves from the two acres where I grew up (the quilt is based on a coverlet made by an unknown maker about 1850). Also, on the border of lap quilts, I quilt the ouline of my right hand I'm a hand quilter). Thanks very much--I admire Deborah's work and would love to learn collage technique s.

ReplyDeleteLiving on Cape Cod it's easy to have a personal symbol of sea grasses. They are ever present in my free motion stitching in my artwork as they are in my daily life. They bend with the wind just as I try to do!
