My friend, artist Deborah Bochert has a great new book out called Art Quilt Collage: A Creative Journey in Fabric, Paint and Stitch, and to celebrate, she’s hosting a book release blog hop with video chats! There’s a chance to win the book at each blog hop stop.
Deborah’s book focuses on her interesting collage technique, combining fabric elements with surface design and stitch (both hand work and machine stitching). If you are looking for good basic information about art quilt design, this book has it. It has tons of photos with specific examples, practical advice, and exercises to help you get started or take your work in another direction. It’s a fun read and a valuable resource. I especially enjoyed the section on finding and working with your personal symbols. (One of Deborah’s is the ladder.)
You can get a copy through C&T Publishing here:
http://www.ctpub.com/art-quilt-collage/
Through Amazon here:
https://www.amazon.com/Art-Quilt-Collage-Creative-Journey/dp/161745284X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1473552342&sr=8-1&keywords=deborah+boschert
and Deborah has signed copies in her Etsy shop (buy one of the first 50 copies and you’ll get a bonus of original surface designed fabric she made!)

Here’s my video chat with Deborah:
Here’s a chance to win a copy of the book. Leave a comment after this post before noon EST September 30. Tell me if you have a personal symbol. If so, what is it? And if you don't have one (yet), what would it be? One of mine is the moon… constant and comforting, yet changeable; mysterious, and sometimes spooky; far away and unreachable, yet ever present in the night sky.
I’ll pick a comment at random. Make sure you include a way for me to reach you in case you win.
If you live in the USA, you’ll get a paper copy of the book. International winners will receive a e-book version.
Don’t forget to check out the other blog stops for more chances to win!

ReplyDeleteI have a rubber stamp that I use on my labels that features A words (a for Ali!!!) and my personal symbols are two small stained glass pieces of church and a bird...for Church Bird (I made up the name when I got married!!). This book looks like an incredible resource for going outside the box!!! Thanks for reviewing it!
ReplyDeleteI lov this book,,,it needs me,,and I need it,,,
ReplyDeleteI dint have a symbol as such...maybe I should start to think about it. Sounds like a wonderful book!
ReplyDeleteSounds like a very interesting book.
ReplyDeleteArt quilts is something I want to explore and this book sounds like the perfect place to start! My personal symbol is a flat spiral. I have earrings with this shape that were hand-made in Sante Fe. I think it means "eternal". Sometimes I think it means crazy and life just keeps me spinning! :)
ReplyDeletepalm tree seams to be my constant symbol as i paint it every where! sunset is also high on my list.
ReplyDeleteKathy E: i have hammered copper wire into flat spiral decades ago.And hoops!
I seem to have a few symbols-- dragonflies, leaves, trees, nests, and recently dying fall flowers.
ReplyDeleteCan't say I have a steady symbol, but I suppose it has to do with constant change... I'm thinking if I had to have one .... maybe the dotted line in the center of the road... going in any direction, but keeping things moving along on the right side.
ReplyDeleteHad never thought about it before, but I guess if I had a symbol it would be daffodils, symbolizing, spring, warmth, rebirth, new life.
ReplyDeleteI already own a copy of Art Quilt Collage. It's SEW AWESOME!!! Hoping to win your copy to donate to my guild. Thanks for the opportunity!
ReplyDeleteI'd love to have a copy of this book. Looks like it's just the book I need to help start my art quilting journey. My personal symbol is a single eye. I have lots of eye doodles I'd like to translate into art quilts. Thanks for this opportunity!
ReplyDeleteFish is my symbol! I use it a lot in my textile art pieces.
ReplyDeleteI never really thought of a symbol. But I would have to pick a figure dancing. " life's a dance you learn as you go". It comes from a song but expresses my life and quilting. Quilting on my mind @ Facebook
ReplyDeleteDeborah is such a creative art quilter. I think I may have too many symbols - dragonflies, hummingbirds, feathers (all kinds, but especially peacocks), leaves, sun/moon.
ReplyDeleteI don't have a symbol but I love birds especially Humming birds so maybe that would be my symbol. Tiny, mighty, fierce and oh so stunning.
ReplyDeleteCircles!
ReplyDeleteI do have a symbol that I love to use in my work, a peace sign. Thanks for the chance to win this wonderful book!
ReplyDeleteLook forward to seeing the new book! Sometimes I will scan or take a photo of a project I am working on and take it into a drawing program to test out designs and colors. As to a symbol...Hmmm...For now, let's go with a butterfly. I'm inspired by nature and my work is always morphing and changing.
ReplyDeleteNo personal symbol - wait! That's not true . . . I've just realized that the 70's happy face is my symbol. I've been using it to sign notes for decades - started well before the "emoticon" was ever invented. Ha! Funny, now that I think about it! :-)
ReplyDeleteLove Deborah's work and I love the look of this book. I use heron's in a lot of my work. The moon appears too, like you Susan. But maybe I should devote some time to adopting a symbol that represents something more about me.
ReplyDeleteI don't have a symbol , never thought about it but perhaps a heart would be a good one symbolizing love . Thanks for the chance to win this book , it looks awesome .
ReplyDeleteWhen our daughter, now 36, was growing up, she was always drawing hearts on everything. Now that has become my thing: HEARTS. It can mean anything to anybody, but mainly love to all. cswsand50@hotmail.com
ReplyDeleteWonder if this could release me from my fear to create an art quilt? Traditional quilts are starting to pile up with no where to go. This is in my future!
ReplyDeleteMy personal symbol is a circle that is crossed top to bottom and side to side (equidistant cross inside the circle) The other is a bare tree. I have carved rubber stamps for both of them.
ReplyDeleteI'd love to add this book to my collection. It looks full of inspiring ideas. Leaves seem to creep into my fibre art.
ReplyDeleteI don't know if I have a personal symbol or not but I do have an affinity to the sun because of my mother.
ReplyDeleteI don't know that I have a personal symbol. Perhaps a leaf.
ReplyDeletePersonal symbol ... hmmm ... maybe a firefly ... a little light in the dark that begins its night low to the ground and rises up thru the trees as the night moves toward morning.
ReplyDeleteGreat review and I look forward to reading this book.

ReplyDeleteHadn't really thought of it as my "personal" symbol but mine would have to be a dragonfly. They seem to show up in nearly every piece of art I create!
ReplyDeleteI often use leaves ever since I made a quilt of leaves by tracing leaves from the two acres where I grew up (the quilt is based on a coverlet made by an unknown maker about 1850). Also, on the border of lap quilts, I quilt the ouline of my right hand I'm a hand quilter). Thanks very much--I admire Deborah's work and would love to learn collage technique s.
ReplyDeleteI've always wanted to try my hand at an art quilt. My symbol would be a sunflower. It follows the sun and provides seeds for nourishment. It seems happy and it blooms big - like me! Joan

ReplyDeleteAs much as I love the natural world I would have to say my symbol is a book. Can't ever have too many and they open up worlds beyond reach just like Deborah's does.

ReplyDeleteLiving on Cape Cod it's easy to have a personal symbol of sea grasses. They are ever present in my free motion stitching in my artwork as they are in my daily life. They bend with the wind just as I try to do!
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of a personal symbol! I sometimes put frogs on things, but not always...plus, I don't think that is what I would CHOOSE to represent me! Tell Deborah that I have been a fan of her work since I saw her pieces at the Yeiser, many years ago!
ReplyDeleteMy personal symbol is a sign painters quill. And I tend to use ocean and beach symbols a lot in my work.

ReplyDeleteAn anchor would be my symbol. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteI'd love to have the book. It sounds interesting. My symbol is a dragonfly.
ReplyDeleteA lot of interesting symbols mentioned in the previous comments already! I think my symbol should be a leaf, I'm especially fond of an unfurling fern frond. Though a needle and thimble would be great, too.
ReplyDeleteAnd now I'm thinking of it, sea anemone or seahorse would be great, too. I think I will have to try using them all, though probably not at the same time!
My personal symbol is a heart! Looking forward to winning this great book, caltexgal@aol.com
